Application for Spanish NIE from France

Obtaining a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) before moving to Spain is a wise step for any future expatriate, student, or investor. The application can be made directly at a Spanish consulate in France, which greatly simplifies the process from a distance.

This personal identification number, issued by the Spanish authorities, will be essential for many procedures on-site. This practical guide details why and how to apply for your NIE from France, the required documents, and the expected timelines.

What is the NIE?

The NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) is a personal and unique identifier assigned by the Spanish authorities to any foreigner with economic, professional, or social interests in Spain.

It consists of an initial letter, seven numbers, and a final control letter. It is a true administrative key: without it, you cannot open a bank account, buy a property, or sign an employment contract.

The NIE is therefore central to any procedure involving a foreigner in Spain. As soon as you plan to stay for more than 90 days or have economic interests in the country (purchase, business creation, etc.), obtaining this number becomes mandatory.

Why apply for your NIE from France?

Applying for your NIE from France in advance has several major advantages.

The advantages of applying from France

  • Anticipate procedures: You will have your number as soon as you arrive, allowing you to get started without delay.
  • Avoid administrative backlog: Immigration services in major Spanish cities are often overloaded, with appointment delays of several months.
  • Start without delay: The absence of a NIE can block important transactions, such as buying a property, and delay your settlement.

However, the consular process also has its limits. The processing time is often longer than in Spain (expect 2 to 6 weeks). So, you need to plan well in advance.

Furthermore, the document obtained is a "white NIE" on an A4 sheet. It is an identification number, but it does not authorize residence in Spain. If you plan to stay for more than 3 months, you will need to complete additional steps on-site to obtain your resident certificate (the "green card").

Where and how to apply in France?

The NIE application is made at the Spanish consulate responsible for your place of residence in France. Spain has several consulates (Paris, Lyon, Marseille, etc.). Identify the one that corresponds to your home address.

The application must be submitted in person and by appointment only. You cannot send your file by mail.

If you cannot travel, you can authorize a representative (a relative, a lawyer, etc.) with a notarized power of attorney. They will have to go to the consulate with all the necessary documents.

Documents to provide to the consulate

To obtain your NIE via the consulate, prepare a complete file with the following documents:

Required documents for the NIE application

  • EX-15 application form duly completed and signed (can be filled out online). Clearly state the economic, professional, or social reasons (employment, property purchase, etc.).
  • Valid identification document: passport or national identity card for EU citizens. Present the original + a photocopy.
  • Proof of the reason for the application: proof of your project in Spain (preliminary sales agreement, job offer, internship agreement, etc.).
  • Proof of residence in France within the consular district (recent bill, rent receipt...).
  • Payment of the administrative fee of approximately €10, via the Modelo 790 – Code 012 form. Check the payment methods with your consulate.

Note: the DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) is the national identity document for Spanish citizens, while the NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is for foreigners. The NIE generally consists of 9 characters, including letters at the beginning and end, and numbers in the middle. The letters are used to identify the category or the period of assignment of the number.

Special cases

  • If someone represents you: add a certified copy of your identity document, the original + copy of the representative's identity document, and the notarized power of attorney.
  • If the application is for a minor: attach a copy of the family record book or a birth certificate, as well as the identity document of the parent submitting the application.

Making an appointment at the consulate

An appointment is mandatory to submit your file. It is usually made via an online form on the website of the consulate you depend on.

Plan ahead! Waiting times for an appointment can range from a few days to several weeks, or even 1 to 3 months in the busiest consulates.

On the day of the appointment, arrive at the agreed time with a complete file. Any missing document could lead to a refusal and require you to make a new appointment.

After the application: timeline and receiving the NIE

Once your file is submitted, the consulate forwards it to the General Commissariat for Foreigners and Borders in Spain. The consulate has no control over processing times.

On average, the NIE is sent back within 2 weeks, but this period can vary from a few days to more than a month. Allow for a safety margin.

The NIE is then delivered by the consulate, most often by email. You will receive a NIE certificate on paper (A4 format). Keep this document safe.

In case of emergency

If the consular route is too slow, it is possible to apply for the NIE directly in Spain. By getting an appointment at a police station, the NIE is usually issued on the same day. The main difficulty is getting this appointment. To learn more, see our guide to getting your NIE quickly.

What does the NIE obtained from the consulate allow?

The NIE issued via the consulate is exactly the same number as the one obtained in Spain. It is sometimes referred to as a "white NIE" (provisional document for non-residents) as opposed to the "green NIE" (the European resident card).

This number will allow you to carry out almost all administrative procedures and transactions in Spain.

What your NIE allows you to do

  • Open a bank account in Spain.
  • Sign a contract (purchase, rental, work). Without a NIE, it is impossible to finalize a property purchase or be registered with Social Security.
  • Carry out other administrative procedures: apply for an internet connection, pay taxes, register a vehicle, start a business...

In summary, the NIE obtained via the consulate will allow you to start your projects in Spain without delay.

However, be careful: the NIE is not a residence permit. If you plan to live in Spain for more than 3 months, you will need to register with the Registro de Extranjeros to obtain the resident certificate (the famous green card). To learn more, see our full article: All about the NIE in Spain.
