Getting your NIE in Valencia

Valencia, a jewel on the Mediterranean coast and Spain's third-largest city, attracts numerous French expatriates every year. To properly settle there, obtaining your NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) will be one of the first essential steps. The NIE application is a prerequisite for many other formalities, for essential administrative reasons such as real estate purchases, opening a bank account, or residence; it is therefore indispensable for any foreign person. In this article, we explain step by step how to obtain this precious document: what it's for, how to make an appointment, what documents to prepare, where to go on the day, not forgetting some Valencia-specific tips (and a word about empadronamiento).

As a reminder, the NIE is an identification number assigned by the Spanish government through an official process. Follow this guide for a stress-free installation!

The NIE: Essential for Living in Valencia

The NIE is the foreigner identification number in Spain. The NIE number comprises a letter (X, Y, or Z) followed by digits and a verification character, which guarantees its uniqueness and authenticity. It's a unique code that will be assigned to you for life, and it is essential for most daily procedures such as registering with social security. Without a NIE, it's impossible (or very complicated) to rent accommodation, sign an employment contract, open a bank account, or even subscribe to a phone plan. This official identification number for foreigners is distinct from the Spanish national identity number. This numero de identificación is not an identity card, but it serves as a reference in all your interactions with the Spanish administration and many private organizations. The NIE is different from the identity card, resident card, certificado de registro, and registro de ciudadano: it is the equivalent of an identification number for foreigners having a social or economic link with Spain, while the other documents are required for permanent residence or certain specific activities.

In Valencia, which has a large expatriate community, the NIE will be requested from your first days. Whether you're coming to work, study, or spend your retirement on the Valencian coast, this number will follow you everywhere and unlock your administrative steps (social security, local driver's license, various contracts, etc.). In summary, the NIE is indispensable for living and working legally in Spain, and it's better to obtain it as soon as possible and even before your arrival.

How to Make an Appointment for the NIE in Valencia?

In Spain, obtaining the NIE is done exclusively by appointment (cita previa), especially in large cities. It is also possible to obtain an appointment at a Spanish consulate in France, depending on your place of residence. To make an appointment in Valencia, visit the official online platform dedicated to foreigners. On this site, you'll need to select "Valencia" as the province, then choose the procedure "Policía – NIE" from the list of proposed procedures. Once these options are validated, the system will allow you to see available time slots and confirm your appointment (you'll need to enter your personal information, such as passport number, to finalize the reservation).

Warning: Valencia being a large city, slots fill up quickly, especially during high season (summer, September back-to-school). It's not uncommon to see the message « No hay citas disponibles » (no appointments available) displayed. Don't get discouraged: check the site regularly, several times a day if necessary. Try different times (early morning, late evening...) as new slots may open randomly or following cancellations. As demand is high, perseverance is essential to secure an appointment.

Tip:

Many new slots are released at the beginning of the week (for example Monday morning around 8am), a good time to try your luck. In any case, anticipate as much as possible: applying at a Spanish consulate or at one of the consulates or consular posts closest to your place of residence can be an alternative if you haven't arrived in Valencia yet; each consulate or consular post has its own procedures for obtaining an appointment and submitting your file.

Documents to Prepare

For your NIE appointment in Valencia, careful preparation of your file is crucial. Here's the list of documents to gather (don't forget to make photocopies, as the administration will require them):

  • Valid passport or identity card – The original + one photocopy. This document serves to verify your identity and nationality (as an EU citizen, your French ID card is sufficient, otherwise passport). In some cases, the family record book may be requested to prove filiation. It is also necessary to photocopy and attach the biographical page of the passport or identity card to your file.
  • Duly completed form EX-15 – This is the official NIE application form (available online on official Spanish sites). It is important to properly fill out the form, in capital letters if necessary, indicating your personal data and the reason for your application (work, studies, real estate purchase, etc.). Print it in two copies (one for the administration, one for you).
  • Proof of your installation in Valencia – You must prove the reason why you are requesting a NIE in Valencia. This could be, for example, a local employment contract, registration with social security as an autónomo (self-employed worker), a university enrollment certificate if you are a student, or any other document attesting to your economic, professional or social interests in Spain. Justification of a professional activity or an economic activity in Spain may be requested. If your documents are written in another language, a certified translation into Spanish may be required. In short, bring any document that can support the reason stated on your EX-15 form.
  • Form 790-012 and payment of the fee – Form model 790 code 012 corresponds to the administrative fee for obtaining the NIE. The amount is modest (less than €10). You can download and fill out this form online, then either pay it directly by going to a bank counter before the appointment. To pay the fee, present yourself at a bank in Spain with the completed 790-012 form, make the payment and collect the receipt. It is essential to present this receipt during your appointment. Tip: it is recommended to pay this fee before the appointment (at a bank in Spain), this will save you from having to go out urgently on the day. In any case, keep the payment receipt carefully, it must be presented.
  • Photocopies of all documents – Plan a copy of each document: passport/ID card, form EX-15, various supporting documents, and the 790-012 fee receipt. Authorities in Valencia generally require duplicates of each document, one being kept by the administration and the other, stamped, may be returned to you. Better to have too many copies than not enough!

In summary, a complete file includes completed form and fee, identity document, proof of your situation, and all corresponding photocopies. This preparation will save you many unnecessary trips. Don't forget that the NIE is essential for opening a bank account in Spain.

Where to Go to Obtain the NIE in Valencia?

On the day of the appointment, you must present yourself in person at the designated office. In Valencia, the main Foreigners Office is located at the police station (Comisaría de Policía) on Calle Bailén, n°9, in the city center. This is the main National Police branch that handles NIEs for residents of Valencia and its region. The police station plays a central role in the NIE obtaining process: this is where you must submit your file and complete all necessary administrative procedures. Make sure to arrive on time (or even early) on the day, with your complete file. Queues can be long, and organization is generally done by appointment order: take a ticket or register with the reception officer.

The procedure once on site is fairly standard. You will first hand over your entire file at the counter: the officer will verify that all forms are properly completed and that supporting documents are present.

NIE delivery can be immediate or deferred: in some cases, the officer will print on the spot a certificate with your NIE number (and you'll leave with this precious document in hand). In other cases – particularly if the service is saturated – you may be asked to come back in a few days to collect your NIE certificate. In Valencia, delivery is most often almost immediate on the same day, but be prepared for the possibility of a second trip if necessary.

Valencia-Specific Tips

  • Language: Good news, in Valencia many counter staff and police officers are used to foreigners and speak a little English. This can help if your Spanish is still hesitant. However, don't rely solely on this luck: it is always preferable to master a few key words in Spanish to facilitate the exchange. For example, cita previa (appointment), tasa (tax, fee), empadronamiento (registration at town hall), or simply NIE which is pronounced in Spanish "n-i-e" (don't say nie as in French). Showing that you make the effort to speak Spanish, even basically, will be appreciated and may smooth the procedure.
  • Quality of life and expatriate profile: Valencia offers a reasonable cost of living and excellent quality of life by the Mediterranean. It attracts both retirees looking for sunshine and digital nomads and international students. Thus, NIE applications can concern varied profiles: some settle permanently, others come for a few months.

In any case, permanent resident or long-term visitor, the number that will be assigned to you will have the same form and will follow you for life. The difference is mainly at the level of residence status: a European who plans to live more than 3 months in Spain will then need to register as a resident (European resident certificate, sometimes called green NIE), while a non-resident may be content with the temporary NIE to carry out transactions.

  • Organization and patience: In Valencia, even if the administration is generally efficient, expect some delays during periods of high traffic. Avoid if possible administrative procedures in August (many staff are on vacation, and hours may be restricted), as well as the very first days of September when many newcomers make their applications. If you can, make your appointments in the morning (offices often operate from 9am to 2pm) and keep your afternoon free in case the procedure drags on a bit. Better to plan large and leave with the NIE in hand, than to have to postpone until the next day for lack of time.

Social Networks: Getting Information and Sharing about the NIE in Valencia

In the digital age, social networks have become valuable allies for foreigners settling in Valencia and wishing to obtain their NIE (Foreigner Identification Number). On Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or specialized forums, many groups and pages gather French-speaking and international expatriates living in Spain. These virtual communities are real mines of information for everything related to administrative procedures, and in particular obtaining the NIE.

By joining these groups, you can ask questions about the different stages of the application, share your experiences or read testimonials from other people who have already obtained their number in Valencia. Members regularly exchange practical advice, tips for filling out forms, feedback on delays, or recommendations on the best times to make appointments. It's also an excellent way to stay informed of possible procedural changes or difficulties encountered by other foreigners in the city.

Social networks thus facilitate mutual help between newcomers and more experienced residents, and allow you to save precious time in your procedures. Don't hesitate to use the group search function to find discussions about the NIE in Valencia, or to post a message if you have a specific question. You will often find quick answers adapted to your situation, as well as links to official resources or practical guides.

In summary, joining these online communities is an excellent idea to optimize your NIE obtaining journey and feel supported in your expatriate procedures in Valencia. Social networks are now an essential complement to official information, and a friendly exchange space for all foreigners seeking their precious number in Spain.

Think About Empadronamiento After the NIE

Obtaining your NIE is only a first step in your installation in Valencia. As soon as you have your NIE number, we advise you to register ("empadronarse"), that is, to register on the city's inhabitants register. The empadronamiento is done at the town hall (Ayuntamiento de València) or in the juntas de distrito depending on your neighborhood. This municipal registration, separate from the NIE, allows you to attest to your local residence. In exchange, you are given a certificado de empadronamiento (municipal residence certificate).

Why is this important? On one hand, Spanish law requires anyone residing more than 6 months per year in a municipality to register there. On the other hand, this certificate will be useful for many procedures: registering children in school, access to certain social services, obtaining the Spanish health card, etc. Even to buy a car or renew certain documents, you may be asked for it as proof of address. In short, think about it once you have your NIE: it's a free and quick formality that completes your administrative installation in Valencia.
